Golf Swing Teaching Aids – The Advantages

December 31st, 2009

There is a rumor amongst amateur golfers that the pros would never use golf swing teaching aids. Well let’s just lay that rumor to rest right now.

The primary teaching aid that the pros use, is of course the coach. Maybe you or I don’t have the money to afford personal tuition, but just as a coach will select particular teaching aids to use with a player, so we can select those teachings aids for ourselves. Some of these aids work better than others, and some are gadgets which are probably no better than toys. However, by doing some research there are some great resources out there to help you improve your swing.

So what do you need to look out for when you are making your selection. Firstly, do not rush into anything, look around carefully and view any testimonies of users of the tool or resource, to see how valuable it has demonstrated itself to be. Once you have made your selection and in order to help transfer your knowledge into practice, the most important thing in order to allow you to work on your swing will be something that allows you to see what you are doing. The best method, if you have the opportunity available to you, is to use the video equipment in the practice area of your local course. Another option would be to film yourself on a computer webcam or have a friend or family member follow you around with a video camera. You will be surprised at how much you will be able to learn just from watching your swing on video.

In conclusion then, in order to gain the most from any golf swing teaching aids you need to first make your selection carefully after much research and then you need a way of viewing your swing and the overall effects of whatever aids you are using.

What Makes a Golf Course Successful?

December 31st, 2009

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Have you ever wondered why some golf courses are successful and others nearby with similar terrain are not? Aside from the golf course’s reviews, operations or the value of real estate, what makes a golfer decide that a specific golf course is successful? What qualities deem it successful in the eye of the beholder? And who judges these courses anyway? It would seem that opinions on the success of a golf course would vary dramatically. Think about how a handicapped person would judge a golf course.

What about a professional golfer with exceptional skills that loves to be challenged? In contrast, how about a young group of women who occasionally get together to play golf on easy terrain because they think it’s just something fun to do, but are not truly dedicated to the sport? And, for that matter, do non-golfers opinions count? If a non-golfer drives by a course one day and notices miles and miles of beautifully cut green, perfectly landscaped trees and colorful flowers, with ducks swimming in a pond, do they get to decide if that course is better than another? With such varying opinions, who and what make a golf course successful?

It has to be said that the “wow” factor of a visually appealing golf course is usually a substantial determining factor relatable to its success. Although an architect may have designed the course with deep rough close to a fairway to be more visually appealing, does it make a golfer still want to play there if they are constantly losing their golf balls? That is a common and valid complaint in the golfing industry and most don’t consider losing their golf balls as a challenge, they view it as an annoyance. Deep rough may dissuade golfers from playing at that course. But on the other hand, if there isn’t deep rough or enough challenging bunkers, the course may seem too easy for golfers with higher skill levels who enjoy being challenged. The “wow” factor of a beautifully-designed golf course can make it successful or it can turn away some golfers who may view it as pretentious and overly-challenging.

In theory, a successful golf course should be designed to appeal to as many different people and skill levels as possible to give satisfaction and pleasure to all. Although there are many golf courses that strive to do just that, there will always be individuals or groups of people that will base a golf course’s success on their own personal list of criteria. A beautiful private golf course resort with challenging terrain may appeal to some, while a public course that is inexpensive and not very challenging may appeal to others. One of the best things to do is research golf courses online and read golf course reviews Read about how their experience was, if there were enough challenging shots, if the scenery was everything it claimed to be, if there were too many bunkers, not enough, and more. A golf course is only as successful as the customers make it.

Choosing the Right Golf Clubs

December 30th, 2009

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Choosing the right clubs when it comes to playing your best golf game can be quite the tricky proposition. In fact, if you decide to just walk into a golf store you could very well be overwhelmed by the shear number of options that are so readily available to you. There are all kinds of brands that claim they do ‘this’ and ‘that’ for your golf game (most beginning golfers have no idea what ‘this’ and ‘that’ are much less whether they need improvement with ‘this’ or ‘that’.)

The sheer truth of the matter is that no club is going to be best for you simply based on what problem it claims to fix. Well, maybe big Bertha can help you make longer drives, but most serious golfers consider that to be cheating. The trick is choosing the right golf clubs for your individual golf game.

The reality of that is that it isn’t always possible to find a set that will be optimized to your need. The best way to go will be to have an analyses done at Ping and order custom made equipment. The problem with this is that the average golfer truly can’t afford such an investment in a hobby that is quite expensive to pursue even without cost prohibitive clubs.

If you’ve played the sport a little while and your old set of clubs is tired and you are looking for ways to improve your score a little at a time, then perhaps you should consider incorporating one of the nicer clubs at a time into your golf set (all the while eliminating less effective clubs). This will help you improve a little as you go and slowly get the best set of golf clubs for your game at the same time. ‘A little bit is better than nada’ after all.

I do not recommend going out and buying a set of clubs because you see your favorite pro golfer wearing a shirt representing that brand. Your pro golfer’s clubs are going to be custom made and fitted for him and her and not the same clubs you can go in and buy off the shelf. I also don’t suggest buying a set of clubs because you like their name or they look different from the other clubs. Talk to the salesman at the shop, ask questions and discuss problems you are having with your golf game. Get his suggestions, then go home and research that. You do not want to fill his pockets with a commission check that is best for him and own a set of clubs that aren’t best for you.

No matter what steps you take towards choosing the right set of golf clubs, they will not magically fix your golf game. Combine the right set of clubs with lessons from a pro and regular practice and you should begin to see slow and steady improvement. You also keep in mind that if everyone could be Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson, we’d all be on the pro tour. Some of us are just not naturally talented in the golf arena and no clubs are going to fix that. It’s about fun after all, that’s the most important thing.

How to Choose Golf Apparel

December 29th, 2009

Image : http://www.flickr.com

According to the golf game etiquette you have to look presentable and appropriate clothes is a must. Most private country clubs have a dress code and dressing appropriately shows respect for other golfers and club members. The full history of golf clothing would take a book. Golf fashion styles were very variable, from elegant jackets and trousers to shocking and colorful T-Shirts. But true golfers do understand the necessity of being well-dress on a course.  Good clothes makes the golf game what it is, and many people agree that it’s a good rule and tradition to be well-dressed on the green. Thankfully, golf is not a gentlemen’s game anymore.  Since women and kids started to play golf, many companies diversified their golf apparel lines. Now you can choose from hundreds of brands, materials, sizes and styles of golf tops, bottoms, shoes and equipment.

First and foremost, you have to purchase before playing golf is a form-fitting polo and mock tee shirt with a collar. It can be sleeveless, long sleeves, quarter sleeves etc.  Pants are better to wear with a leather belt. Pants also shouldn’t have any cuffs to avoid soiling by dirt. Shorts should be specially designed for golf, no denim or gym shorts are allowed. Good length is just above the knees. Remember, that socks should match your pants and your shoes. Women could wear skirts without any problems. There are plenty of different skirt styles and colors available on markets and online stores. Golfers usually wear a colorful clothes made from many different materials but do not mix all colors at the same time. A good hint is to choose one bright color (red, pink, yellow) and leave other items neutral (brown, black, white).  Your golf polo and golf trousers should fit you perfectly, help you to play golf comfortably and do not hinder movements.  Each item should be clean and pressed thoroughly.

One of the most important thing in your golf wardrobe is a golf shoes.  Do not be grudge on a good pair of golf shoes. Sandals or sneakers are not allowed. Comfort and support are worth the money. Another good rule is “no metal spikes”.

Many golfers use golf gloves to control and feel the clubs better, but this detail is not a first-necessity. Golf gloves could be very helpful when the weather is rainy or windy.

Your golf uniform collection should also include the following: golf sweater, golf pullover or vest to keep you warm if the weather is getting colder, waterproof golf clothing to be able to play when it’s wet and lightweight hats to keep the sun off your head and face, it could also improve your vision.  Tommy Bahama, Taylor Made, Ian Poulter, Cobra, Tiger Woods, Callaway – these brands are made the best caps, which one to choose – it’s up to you to decide!

Nike, Adidas, Callaway, Foot Joy and other top sports names make excellent mens and ladies apparel for the game. Clothes produced by these sports companies are very stylish, fashionable and elegant.  Now it is not a problem to find any kind of golf apparel to satisfy golfers’ needs.

Proper golf apparel makes you look better and feel more comfortable and makes the golf experience more fun and enjoyable. Moreover, your golf-mates will definitely take you seriously.

Awesome Golf Swing Takeaway Tip

December 28th, 2009

Image : http://www.flickr.com

I’ll never forget the time a few years ago when my brother in law Steve explained to me how he discovered a major break through in his golf swing. He describes this golf swing takeaway tip as “lightning in a bottle”…the true holy grail of golf!

Steve told me he had been sitting at an 8 handicap for about 4 years and was getting very frustrated at his lack of improvement. He practiced diligently however he had truly reached a plateau in his golf game.

He went through about 4 golf pros during this time and every one of them told him there was nothing wrong with his golf swing. Eventually he started playing less and less golf and was about ready to give it up altogether.

Steve said while on vacation with his family he was browsing through an old book store on Martha’s Vineyard when he came across a used copy of Joe Dante’s “Four Magic Moves to Winning Golf” written in 1972. He said he couldn’t put the book down so out of courtesy to the store owner he bought it.

Steve showed me the book and as I leafed through it I was amazed at all the beautifully drawn illustrations showing how to swing a golf club properly. Andy Brown has since revised this book for the 21st century and offers many media formats to read or listen to the book.

Steve turned to the chapter that explains “the early backward wrist break” and told me this one magic move has totally transformed his golf game! He went on to say how golf pros never tell you HOW to break the wrists during the backswing for whatever reason. Steve believes the first 18 inches of the backswing are the most critical.

Most golfers fan the clubface open early in the backswing causing them to swing the club way too much to the inside…this knocks the swing off plane early in the backswing. Golfers then usually spend the rest of the golf swing trying to adjust so they can just make contact with the ball…not a good recipe for success!

The book goes on to say there should be no open or closing of the clubface early in the backswing…if you correctly perform the early backward wrist break your swing will be on plane early in the swing…Steve says he feels like the club is swinging itself…a truly effortless swing!

I am happy to say that my brother in law Steve is now a scratch golfer, thanks to this one magic move that has transformed his golf game!

When you make the backward wrist break perfectly – only one knuckle of your left hand (right handed golfers) and two knuckles of your right hand should be visible and the golf club should be parallel to your target line.

You pay a lot of money to play this great game of golf…so why not enjoy it more by playing the golf you are capable of?

Try this golf swing takeaway tip and build the early backward wrist break into your golf swing and I promise you will halve your handicap in 2 weeks!

Golf Grip Advice For Longer, Straighter And More Consistent Golf Shots

December 27th, 2009

Image : http://www.flickr.com

How you grip the club has a huge affect on the golf shots you hit. But don’t let anyone tell you that there is one golf grip that everyone should use, because that is simply not true. You’ve just got to look at professional golfers to see this. For example, Ben Hogan used a weak grip to help combat a hook problem. Nick Faldo uses a neutral grip. Then John Daly uses a strong golf grip.

Now you’ve probably heard that the weakness/strength of your golf grip is related to where the V’s of your hands are pointing. But I’ve got a much better way to check your grip and find out what works best for you.

First of all, get a semi permanent felt tip pin and draw circles about 1 cm above your top hand’s knuckles. So for a right handed golfer you would do this on your left hand. For a left handed golfer you would do this on your right hand.

Now simply practice taking your grip and see what your grip feels like when you can see 1 knuckle, then 2 knuckles, then 3 knuckles on your top hand. Also do this exercise with your feet together. By doing this you’ll always have a reference position that you can easily repeat.

By the way, a 1 knuckle grip is considered a weak golf grip, a 2 knuckle grip is considered a neutral golf grip, and a 3 knuckle grip is considered a strong golf grip.

After you’ve setup with each grip then hit balls with each of these golf grips. Incidentally when placing your bottom hand on the grip simply let it go along with what the top hand is doing. And do this so that the groove in the middle of your bottom hand fit’s snugly into your top hands thumb.

Now I want to offer some advice about the grip that will help you if you struggle in hitting one particular shot, i.e. a slice or hook. If you slice the ball a lot you should tend towards a stronger golf grip, e.g. 3 to 4 knuckles showing on the top hand. And conversely if you hook the ball a lot you should move towards a weaker grip, e.g. 1-2 knuckles showing.

But the bottom line is to experiment.

Once you’ve got a good golf grip that works well for you always check it regularly to make sure you’re doing the same thing. Because over time your golf grip can easily become stronger or weaker without you noticing. Also one final thought. Have a system of setting up so you check your golf grip strength as part of your pre-shot routine. Doing this will help to create greater consistency in your game on an ongoing basis.

Nick Bayley is a professional golfer who has discovered just one golf swing fault that could be stopping you from ball striking consistency and success. But luckily for you, now you can take a simple 2 minute golf swing test to see if you have this swing fault or not. So don’t delay! Go here to take The Golf Swing Test now.
