Discount Golf Shoes

February 28th, 2010

Some people think that having golf shoes is not really a necessary part of the game.

If you play golf once a year with your buddies and you don’t really even own any clubs, then buying shoes for golf is probably not necessary. But if you play golf on a regular basis, then having the correct footwear is a must. If you didn’t need the shoes, then all of the professional golfers would be playing in regular athletic shoes. Shoes can be expensive, so finding discount golf shoes is always a nice surprise.

Many of the golf shoes that are sold in stores and online will go on sale near the end of the golf season. In states where there is no end to the golf season, you can usually just watch for the new arrivals, and then go buy last years model.

Shoes provide golfers with the stability they need to hit the ball. If you are swinging your golf clubs correctly, you are putting a lot of pressure on your knee and torso to make the swing. Having good footing is a very necessary part of making the turn to finish the golf swing.

The correct shoes will keep your body grounded and allow you to make that finish. The best shoes will come at a premium price, but there are some discount golf shoes that would work for beginning golfers or golfers that don’t play very often.

Selecting the correct shoe also comes down to your swing speed. Golfers that have a high swing speed are going to need shoes that have good stability and good spikes. If you swing speed is slower, you might want to focus on finding shoes that are comfortable to walk in for the entire round. The slower swing speed golfers still need that stability, but there is not as much torque coming through on their swings.

The best place to find discount golf shoes is at the major golf stores.

All of these stores have websites, and they are always running sales to get rid of their overstock shoes. If you actually go to the stores at the beginning of the new golf season, they will often have shoes out that are excellent quality, but last years model.

You can also find similar deals at the end of the golf season. These shoes can be some of the best ones to buy because you are still getting that top quality product, but at a significantly reduced price.

Hi, I’m Stewart Green and I wrote this article. I hope you now have a better understanding of Discount Golf Shoes and how it can help you with your golfing needs. It is my goal to provide quality information for my readers now that I have been playing golf myself for several years.

Golf Tips – How to Increase Driver Distance

February 27th, 2010

Let’s face it. What do we all want? What do we all crave? It’s to put that little golf ball as far down the fairway as possible. If you were given a choice between increasing your distance off the tee by 30 yards, or decreasing your handicap by 4 points, which would you choose? You should choose to better your handicap, but would you? Of course not! You want to pound it past your playing partners off the box, plain and simple. Well…ok…if that is your answer, here are a couple tips to help you get those extra yards.

WIDEN YOUR STANCE

You have read to keep your feet about shoulder width apart when addressing the ball with your driver. That’s fine, but if you want the extra yards, you need to increase your swing arc. In order to do that, you need to make your stance big and wide. Now, don’t go overboard. If you do, you will limit your turn and lose distance along with some accuracy. A little beyond shoulder width will do.

MOVE THE BALL FORWARD

Have someone help you out with this one. Most people have no idea how far back the ball actually is in their stance. The ball should be just inside your left heel. For some reason, a lot of people think the ball is properly placed inside the left heel, but it is actually 3-6 inches (or more) back. Don’t ask me why this is……it just is. Have a friend check out your ball placement. You will be surprised what they tell you. At this point, don’t fight it. It will be a little uncomfortable to begin with, but just do it. After a session on the range, you will get more comfortable.

I won’t try to fill your brain with too much at this point. When it comes to the golf swing, a small change can make a huge difference so let’s take this slow. Try these tips out for a couple weeks. If they help, great! If not, there are more to come. Oh one more thing. Golf is a game so…HAVE FUN!

Golf Courses – Scotland – the East Coast

February 23rd, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Now, everybody knows that Scotland is the home of golf and everybody knows about the role St. Andrews played in the history and development of the modern game of golf. For those that don’t know, here are the facts; the invention that Scotland gave to the game was the golf hole! And, St. Andrews was not one of the first golf courses Scotland had, but it was the first one to establish the number of holes at 18.

With these basic facts out of the way, let’s explore what else Scotland has to offer the golfer (unfortunately it is definitely not the weather!) If you are planning a Scotland golf vacations trip, then I would probably chance going in April / May or September / October. There is no guarantee of the weather in Scotland, but when they have a bad summer it is usually pretty bad. When that happens though, they usually have good weather in Spring or early Autumn.

For this article, I will be writing about the three Championship Courses on the East coast of Scotland, St. Andrews, Carnoustie, and Muirfield.

St. Andrews

So, which golf courses should you play when you are on your Scotland golf vacations? I suppose most golfers will want to start at St. Andrews. There are six golf courses at St. Andrews which are all administered by the St. Andrews Links Trust. The courses are; The Old Course (1754), The New Course (1895), The Jubilee Course (1897), The Eden Course (1914), The Strathtyrum (1993), and TheBalgove Course (9 holes – reopened in 1993). There is a new course, The Castle Course, which opens in June 2008 and will make a grand total of 7 golf courses.

For those that want to play The Old Course, you will have to book way in advance. As an example, at the time of writing this article, February, The Old Course was fully booked until the end of the season. There is also a daily ballot for play the next day but it does not always guarantee a game. There is a handicap requirement of 24 for men and 36 for women and you must produce a valid handicap card or certificate.

The Open has been played 27 times at St. Andrews since the competition started in 1860. The last time was in 2005 which Tiger Woods won; it was the second time that he has won The Open at St. Andrews. 2005 also marked the end a great career for Jack Nicklaus who also won The Open at St. Andrews twice. For more information about playing golf at St. Andrews, visit http://www.standrews.org.uk/golf

Carnoustie

Another championship course which is just north of St. Andrews is Carnoustie. The Open has been held there 7 times, the last being in 2007. It is one of the ten oldest golf clubs in the World, founded in 1842, yet golf has been played at Carnoustie since the 15th Century. It is said that emigrants from Carnoustie played a major role in the foundation of professional golf in the US, Canada and Australia.

The earliest record of an established links dates back to 1527 when the local Earl gave permission to play "Gowf" on the Linksland. In the early 19th Century a short 10-hole course was laid out by Alan Robertson from St Andrews and was called the Taymouth Links. In 1842 local golfers founded The Carnoustie & Taymouth Golf Club and in 1867 Old Tom Morris from St Andrews was engaged to extend the course to 18 holes.

Carnoustie now has three fantastic golf courses, the most famous being the Championship Course where The Open is played. For more information visit the Carnoustie blog at http://www.carnoustiegolfclub.com/

Muirfield

While visiting Edinburgh and enjoying the sites and scenes of Europes most beautiful capital, don’t forget to visit Muirfield golf course. Just 30 minutes east of Edinburgh along the coast, you will find another of the historic golf courses Scotland has to offer.

Muirfield was established in 1891 by The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers who wrote the original 13 rules of golf. Their first club, which dates back to 1744, was at the 5 hole Leith Links which is now a suburb of Edinburgh. They then moved to Musselburgh in 1836 which was a 9 hole golf course and again, is situated just outside of Edinburgh. The Open was played at Musselburgh 6 times during the late 19th Century.

The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers made their final move in 1891 to Muirfield where they still administer the club. Muirfield is considered second to none by many golfers, amateurs and professionals, and is considered one of the finest links courses in the World.

The setting, besides the picturesque village of Gullane on the north facing coast of East Lothian, is spectacular. What makes this course so special is its layout; a clockwise outward half encases an anticlockwise inward nine, an arrangement that ensures that players have to make incessant adjustment for wind direction (and facing The North Sea as it does, wind is usually a factor).

Golf Tips on Driving the Golf Ball

February 22nd, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Hitting the golf ball off of a stationary tee is one of the most difficult skills to learn. That is why using a higher lofted club like a 2 or 3 wood is much easier to hit than a driver or 1 wood.

A smaller headed club with a larger club face degree will elevate the golf ball much quicker, and with more control than a larger club head with less degree. For those who feel they have mastered the game of golf will obviously tell you how important it’s to get that extra distance off the tee when shooting lower scores.

As the golf courses are getting much more challenging and longer with distances. It becomes even more important you find the right kind of driver that feels most comfortable to you and has the features that will help improve your golf swing.

It’s important to develop control and maximum tempo/timing in order to distribute maximum distance. Otherwise, it becomes much more difficult to shoot good scores and your always being faced with longer approach shots into the greens.

Here is a few tips that can help you to hit this club farther and straighter:Learn to trust your golf swing on the golf course.

Most golfers when trying to hit their drives will tense up and over swing. By trying to swing as hard as possible and using as much energy as possible will lose power overall. Resulting in all kinds of bad mishits and lost yardage. Instead relax and swing within yourself. By keeping balanced and under control you will have a much more natural free golf swing.

Focusing on making solid contact you’ll find that launching the golf ball with the right kind of trajectory and swing speed that the ball will travel much farther and straighter. This can result in producing up to 30 yards plus in extra distance off the tee.

I don’t believe it’s important to think about your golf swing mechanics when you are playing. When you are on the golf course all of the fundamentals to a good golf swing should come natural.

Thinking about everything you should be doing becomes nothing more than just a distraction to shooting good golf scores. You do all of your analyzing on the driving range and your focusing with your next shot on the golf course. This is called golf course management.

Instead when playing you need to remain focused on your yardage and the target your aiming at. You should be focused on the target and your swing thoughts should only be in your subconscious mind. You are trusting your golf swing and developing the consistency to hit the perfect shot every time. This is where self-confidence comes into play especially when your using your driver to tee off. You must develop belief in yourself that you can clear obstacles when being confronted and that the golf ball will go exactly to the spot you have envisioned landing.

Learn to use leverage when driving the golf ball long distance. In golf it’s not necessary to have big muscles to pound the ball.

It’s most important to have the right tempo/timing and create the right triangle at the top and down through to your follow through. You form a triangle by having the proper golf grip and stance.(body position). A triangle is formed with your arms and shoulder width.

Concentrate on lengthening your forward (down) swing. The longer you swing the club in the forward swing, the faster the club head speed will travel when it goes through the ball. The impact of the club head and ball should be when your down swing is at it’s lowest vortex. The idea of the entire golf swing is to hold on to the triangle as long as possible, and not trying to force yourself to hold on to any one angle too long.

It seldom works and results in a poor golf swing.

Your golf swing should be fluid and in constant motion. It should be an automatic back and through in one constant motion. Taking the club back slowly and shifting your weight in your hips. With your upper body coiling with your upper shoulders turning inwards.

The stored energy only to be released when you have reached the top of your back swing. Now, you release the energy making sure to have a longer follow through with your swing until your entire body (belt buckle) is facing forward towards the target.

Always try to hit the golf ball with less energy than all out muscling the golf shots. Try swinging at only 80 to 85% of maximum power. When playing later holes you’ll need that extra energy to finish especially when the weather becomes unbearably hot. Swinging with all of your power will drain you and the potential for wild mishit shots goes up. Work instead on patience and persistence. Commit yourself to memory all good swing thoughts.

All great ball strikers who hit accurate tee shots will abstain from hitting with full power. These are the same golfers on the P.G.A. tour with a solid short game and great putting skills are making the most money on the tour.

This article is a recap on the importance of being able to drive the golf ball off the tee.

Tiger Woods finally speaks – ‘I am deeply sorry’

February 20th, 2010

On the 84th day, Tiger Woods finally spoke. He let the world know that he is sorry for what happened, that he will continue to get help for his addiction and that he will not be playing golf anytime soon.

Tiger gave us what appeared to be a previously outlined statement from his abundant PR team, finishing with a plea for people to “believe in me again.” His first message was that of sorrow, but the 13-minute statement turned heated when Tiger spoke of the rumors that Elin had chased and/or hit Tiger with a golf club:

Tiger’s mom, Tim Finchem and fellow PGA Tour player and former Stanford teammate Notah Begay III were in attendance, but Elin was not. That didn’t stop Tiger from speaking about her most of the time.

Tiger admitted during the press conference that he is the only one to blame, admitting, “I was unfaithful.” He also apologized to his family, friends and fans, and said he thought he played by different rules because of money and fame, but agrees that those “actions were wrong.”

Tiger admitted “he has a long way to go,” but he is taking steps in the right direction, and said that no matter what people want to know about his marriage, it is going to stay within the family. “Please leave my wife and kids alone,” Tiger stated.

As for golf, Tiger said that he will return to golf one day, he just doesn’t know when that day will be. He also didn’t rule out returning in 2010, but no date was promised.

All in all it was the press conference we expected — preempted, selective and, in typical Tiger fashion, guarded. Nobody will ever know if Tiger has changed, but it sure sounds like he meant it.
