Golf Instruction Grip Tips

September 2nd, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Golf grip is one of the most important features that will affect, the performance of the individual on the greens. It is advisable to improve the grip while learning to play golf, so that a person can be effective on the greens. It is seen that the grip of most professional golfers is quite similar.

It is important to find the best hand position and grip that suits the player. The correct hold comes only with experience and it is important that the person?s hold is consistent. Once a good grip is established, it is advisable to stick with it by adequate practice. It is important to practice gripping the golf club in a similar manner every time.

There are many ways to hold or grip a golf club. Usually a player uses two, three, or more different grip methods per round. The three most common grips are the ten-finger grip, the overlapping grip and the interlocking grip. It is important to determine the best grip for an individual. There are no restrictions on the type of grips, thus a player can experiment till the right grip is established.

The ten-finger grip is felt to be the easiest and oldest of the grips and therefore used mostly by novice players. It is more like a baseball grip. In this, the right-hand forefinger and the left-hand pinky, butt up to each other on the club. Even senior players or players with large hands feel most comfortable with the ten finger grip.

The Vardon grip, or the overlapping grip, is the most common and popular way to hold a club presently. In this method, the little finger of the right hand overlaps the forefinger of the left hand. Thus the left-hand pinky covers or wraps the right-hand forefinger.

Many great players such as Jack Nicklaus, Tom Kite, and Tiger Wood have the interlocking grip, which is the least common of grips. In this method, the left-hand pinky slips between forefinger and middle finger on the right hand and thus the left pinky and the right forefinger interlock.

Fix Your Golf Swing Faults – Fast

August 24th, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

How many hours have you spent (wasted) trying to correct a golf swing fault?

I know that when I first starting learning this game it was really just an endless succession from one swing fault to the next. I’d apparently fix one, but the compensation patterns that I adopted to do so would lead to another…and another…oh friggin’ brother!

I began to study this frustrating issue from a neuro-muscular (brain-muscle) standpoint. And then it all began to make sense. It was somewhat de-moralizing, but at least it made sense.

What I discovered is that our bodies and our brains put together what is called a “motor engram”. This is basically a movement pattern that becomes programmed into our computer (brain).

You develop motor engrams all the time for repeated tasks. For example, most everyone can stick their car key into their ignition without one bit of thought. Your body/mind has a motor engram that knows the height and angle for the key to fit perfectly, without you thinking about it.

Get a new car, however, and you’re going to miss quite a few times. At the very least you are going to have to think about it, until you establish the new motor engram.

That’s exactly what happens in the golf swing. Your body/mind has a motor engram of “golf swing”. And then you go and change the position of the ignition! Of course there is going to be trouble.

And here is the really sad news – science tells us that it can take up to 10,000 repetitions of a movement to UNlearn a motor pattern and RElearn a new one.

So there you have it…when an instructor or golf magazine tells you that it takes TIME and PRACTICE to change your bad habits, they have science on their side.

Fortunately for all of us, there is a better way.

The emerging field of energy psychology (EP) can quickly and easily accelerate your golf swing changes. EP can “clear” negative feelings and emotions by “tapping” on certain points on the face and body, while focusing on the feeling. What I realized is that the major problem with implementing new golf swing mechanics is that they usually felt awkward, uncomfortable, weird, etc. So EP can eliminate those feelings, by-pass your current motor engram and dramatically reduce your learning curve.

Instead of 10,000 repetitions, your golf swing can feel comfortable and confident in 1 minute. By getting past your imperfect motor engram, your learning curve will be dramatically reduced.

Change is good. Change at lighting speed is even better.

Golf Training Aids

August 18th, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Golf training aids have become vastly popular with golfers everywhere. Golfers of all ages and skill levels are constantly looking for ways to help them improve their scores and reduce their handicaps.

The playing professionals have the talent and coaching to help them hit massive drives off the tee straight down the fairway, or consistently drop putt after putt in the hole. But, for the average golfer, we have to use a variety of proven training aids to help us lower our scores.

All of the TV and magazine ads for golf training aids can be quite overwhelming for the average person looking to improve their golf game. Training aids come in every form and fashion, from the Medicus Dual Hinge Driver, to Footjoy socks to help keep your feet comfortable.

But don’t fret, it’s really not as overwhelming as it appears. Although you may be tempted to buy every golf training aid in sight, it’s not necessary or practical, unless of course money is no object. The more prudent option would be to look at your overall golf game and decide what training aids would benefit your particular golf game.

For example, if you’re driving the golf ball long and straight but you’re having problems with your chipping, you may want to purchase a chipping aid. A product like the Chip Mate Net, or Chip-N-Pitch will help you achieve much better accuracy.

If you’re having problems driving the golf ball and keeping it in the fairway, consider the Medicus Dual Hinge Driver. This tool works great for those who may be slicing the golf ball.

There are also many PGA pros who endorse various golf training aids as well. Most of these products are of very high quality and will provide the needed help for your golf game.

Vijay Singh, the winner of several of golf‘s majors, advertises and uses the Speed Stik. This training device is a golf shaft that measures your swing speed and helps you quicken your swing speed. This in turn will allow you to improve the distance of your drives. Ernie Els, another winner on the PGA tour, uses the Tempotimer. This device wraps around your golf club and will also improve your golf swing.

If you’re having difficulty with your entire golf swing, whether off the tee or near the green, you might want to consider looking at the 8 Board. This particular training aid will help optimize the swing plane for your individual stroke.

While various PGA playing pros advertise golf training aids, you may want to consider talking with the golf teaching pros in your area. They use several different training aids on a daily basis as part of their profession. These teaching pros are an excellent source for advice on what may work for your particular need and what may not.

Several putting aids are also available such as the Eyeline Putting Laser, as well as Path Pro. These are a couple of golf training aids that are endorsed by P.G.A. Professionals of America. Their job is to find the best training aids available for their students.

Golf equipment is not the only training aids available. There are also fitness routines, mental and physical programs and other methods of building the body and mind to improve your golf game. These are also considered to be golf training aids. Tiger Woods is big on physical fitness. He has helped lead the way in golf fitness for the past 10 years.

The golf training aids industry is huge. Several billions of dollars are spent each and every year in this industry. The Internet has been immensely popular as an advertising medium for training aids. Websites are everywhere that sell all sorts of golf aids.

So, if you’re looking to improve your golf game and lower your scores, then take a good look at all of the various training aids available. Get one that suits your needs and your game. You’ll be glad you did!

Golf – the Rich Man’s Hobby?

August 17th, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Golf was invented in 15th-century Scotland, where some of the world’s oldest golf courses are located. It is a relatively simple game that sees you using a club to hit a ball into a hole, yet it is also complex, mainly thanks to the huge size of the courses compared to the tiny balls and holes.

Golf is played with golf clubs, which come in three types: wood, iron and putters. Clubs can be expensive, but a good set of clubs will help your game, as there are differences between each one that affect how far the ball goes. A one wood (a driver) will hit the ball very much further than an eight wood, for example.

There are many golf tournaments in the world today, with the two most important being the professional tournaments, the Masters and the PGA Championship. Many countries also hold open tournaments that amateurs can also enter, such as the US Open and the British Open.

Probably the most famous golfer in the world today is Tiger Woods, who was won ten major golf tournaments to date, making him one of the best golfers ever. Most people think that Jack Nicklaus is the best golfer ever, as he won more tournaments than any other, but if Tiger Woods keeps playing and winning like he is for another decade or so then that could easily change.

If you want to get into golf, there are plenty of ways to learn without having to go around a full-size golf course. Many places have ‘pitch and putt’ mini-golf courses, where you can go with nothing more than a chipping club (an iron) and a putter, and play on mini-holes. Children who are not yet old enough to do this can play crazy golf, which is generally putting-only, and has fun, brightly-coloured obstacles on the course and holes which make the ball do interesting things. It’s surprising just how fun golf can be, and many kids get their start with crazy golf only to go on and play real golf as a hobby for the rest of their lives.

The Most Modern Change in Effective Golf Instruction

August 11th, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Golf instruction has largely been a fairly static process over the decades, with little changes here and there over time, but nothing that has taken the game by storm. That is about to change, as a long overdue collaboration between golf instruction experts, biomechanical scientists, and health care professionals is creating a sensible and exciting opportunity for people to both improve their game and maintain a healthy swing for a lifetime. This is truly the most modern change to be found in the game of golf, and it will alter the field of golf instruction forever!

Why The Medical Experts Matter… In Golf

Golfers – even healthy and strong golfers – often suffer from nagging aches and pains due to their time spent on the course. This is, of course, linked to the repetitive stresses involved in swinging a club in an improper manner. Such damage can result from someone simply trying to square up their club face with the ball. The result is that often, they are unable to function normally the next day. Even players whose aches and pains are not debilitating can find them annoying. Many think that these physical problems just part of the game.

They do not have to be! The problem is that the golf swing is all too often based solely on the club and the ball, and rarely does the instructor take the physical body of the golfer into the equation. You see, health care professionals and biomechanical scientists have been working with golf instructors to determine the best swing for maximizing effective muscle use, while also minimizing strain, wear, and tear on the body’s joints, muscles and tendons. Now that makes good sense!

Biomechanics Can Improve the Game

Biomechanical experts have insights that dovetail perfectly with the minutiae of the golf swing. These scientists are able to determine precisely how a golfer’s joints and muscle groups function optimally to allow an ideal golf swing. They can also tell what elements of a swing are dangerous and put undue strain on musculature and joints that can lead to pain and even serious musculoskeletal injuries over time. Because of this, targeted biomechanical information can be one of your best friends as a golfer, improving every element of your game.

Golf Instruction for the Perfect Connection

It doesn’t take much experience to realize, however, that simply going to the doctor or chiropractor to ask for some health and biomechanical input on your golf game is not going to get the job done. Golf instruction needs to incorporate all the parts of the golf swing so they work seamlessly within the parameters of the body. The Perfect Connection Golf Swing program has done all of the research necessary to make that a reality for the modern golfer, providing remarkable consistency and power that can change the whole game. Even better, it also decreases the risks of developing some of those nagging injuries that have been linked to golf – because if the swing is right, and it works with the body, then there’s a lot less that can go wrong!

For the most modern tips on golf instruction, golfers are well advised to check out http://perfectconnectiongolfswing.com/ for groundbreaking information on biomechanics and the golf swing.

Online Golf – Discount Golf Centers

August 8th, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

As we usher in a New Year and another golf season, it is important that we understand what is available from online golf. Virtually everything a golfer can imagine or desire is out there in the online golf world, but much of it is really worthless. Here is an outline of some of the best things that a golfer can take advantage of with online golf, and some tips for making the online experience better.

The first thing golfers can take advantage of is online tee times. Technology has really provided golfers with the ability to set a tee time from your fingertips at home or on the go. A golfer can simply visit the website of many courses, look over the golf tee time schedule, and write themselves into the desired time slot. Be prepared to provide a credit card, as many courses will require it to hold the tee time for you. Here is a tip, remember to cancel with the course or they may charge you for the round if you do not show up. Also, be cautious using websites that offer discounts or tee times anywhere in the country. These sites often do not have up to date information about local tournaments or other information that could ruin your day. Just read the fine print and see how they interact with the course before you book your tee time online with them.

Another great online golf resource is the availability of golf books. Information about every topic in golf can be had and delivered to your door, Kindle, IPhone, or IPad directly from the online golf community. There are fantastic golf books for topics like learning golf and golf swing tips. There are some unbelievable stories and biographies about professional golfers, as well as some great golf books chronicling tournaments and events of all types. Golf books are a great way to learn golf, learn about the golf swing and technical motion, as well as improve your own game with books of golf swing tips and strategy. Find some great golf books to help get you through the winter or to get some new perspective on fixing that slice.

Finding golf clubs for sale is easier than ever online. Discount centers like Golfsmith, The Golf Warehouse, and Edwin Watts can offer the newest equipment at very competitive prices. The huge volume they move allows them to offer low prices for online purchases, so if you know exactly what you need it is a great way to get a discount price. Here is a tip for buying online, look for specials like free shipping or throw in bonuses like a dozen golf balls free with purchase. If you are searching for used golf clubs for sale you will find plenty on Ebay.com, Craigslist.org, and other websites connecting sellers with buyers. Another tip is to list your old clubs for sale to the online golf community and you might just get enough money from them to buy that new driver or GPS from an online discount golf center!

Golf Club Selection

August 7th, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

One of the most important choices a golfer can make is the choice of a golf club. Which club is the best?

My own personal choice is the one that has the best Long Island Iced Teas, short shorts on the female golf cart attendants and the oddest trophies on the wall of the club house.

But whether or not one chooses the five-iron or the lob wedge seems to be as important as finding the cure for a weekend hangover for some of you, so here we go…

The Driver (also known as the one wood or flibberdegibbet)

Arguably, it can be said that the driver is the most important club choice as breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I mean a good healthy southern breakfast consists of grits with plenty of butter, home-made biscuits and white gravy, pork in some form or another and coffee picked by Juan Valdez that is strong enough to win back our Confederacy without a shot being fired.

So, choosing the correct driver is simple…get the biggest, heaviest, more cholesterol-filled driver that money can buy and whack at it until you can get the ball 300 yards down the fairway.

Failing this, you should just hire a homeless guy to follow you around the course and throw a ball out on the fairway at the appropriate spot.

The Three Wood (also known as the smaller woodie):

This club has an inferiority complex and should just be left alone in the golf bag to sulk.

The Irons (also known as the irons):

The irons are numbered from 1 to 9 and can be arranged in the golf bag to form secret numerical ciphers that can then be used to subtract strokes from your scorecard. They are pretty much interchangeable, since no one can really use them to hit anything useful any meaningful distance.

The Pitching Wedge (also known as, you guessed it…the wedgie):

This club is used for snagging the under-shorts or opponents and causing them great humiliation and physical pain in the nether regions of their respective golf knickers.

The Sand Wedge (also known as the Super Wedgie)

See the explanation above except add sand in the knickers…ouchie! It can also be used for removing snakes from sand traps.

And last but certainly not least,

The Putter (affectionately known as Carson’s pool cue):

The putter is best known of the golf clubs. All the other golf clubs like to be seen with the gregarious putter. The putter can be alone in the golf bag and in mere minutes other clubs will jump into the bag just to be with this friendly club. Even the word “putter” sounds cute.

One thinks about a small motorboat as it putters around a golf course lake like the 97 year-old man who is in front of you putters around the green trying to sink his 47th putt. It makes me want to putt his putter where Yankees put their doodle.

So, actually, the putter can just go hang out with the lob wedge…which I have not even figured out is a legal club, yet.

Matter of fact, I usually BREAK my putter after I twenty-five putt the 18th hole while losing to my arch nemesis, Ralph Scrapple.

Yes! I break that putter and throw it to the ground in a fit of rising blood pressure that could make Mount Saint Helens look like a teenaged zit eruption.

So, this concludes our session on golf club selection…Now, where are those Long Island Iced Teas?

Golf Swing Lesson – Easy Golf Lessons

August 4th, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

It is bad enough needing a Golf Swing Lesson, but if you cannot hit the golf ball properly, then it must be a golf swing problem. That is the technical term for it. However, you can look really stupid if you do not know how to swing? Your Golf club properly?

It can be hard to figure out what needs to be fixed. The way most Golf experts would tell it, you need to be an astrophysicist to explain a Golf Swing Lesson. It helps to be a technical journalist to write it up? It can be difficult for a newbie to see what is wrong with their swing. So first golf lessons, just check to see you have two shoulders first?

That is usually a good pointer to what the problem could be, especially if you only have one. Next tip; if you have two shoulders then you only have half a problem. More often than not; most people dip the back shoulder on the back swing.

They must be really weird; because I cannot for the life of me, dip my back shoulder on the back swing while I am lifting my club up high above and behind my head? Ah well; some people can do the impossible and wreck their golf swing. That is the main cause of a bad swing, believe me; it can cause more problems than the wife.

Actually the back shoulder dip and the wife have a lot in common? They can both cause your timing to be thrown way off. Both can really mess your game up badly. Back shoulder dip leads to weight shift onto the wrong foot when you swing. Your follow through is poor; actually it sucks. You will also get hand distortion on impact.

No I am not on acid? Hand distortion just means your hands are all over the place. They are not staying straight and lined up with the ball properly. Your club face will not be straight on impact.

You will not hit the ball flush. You might top the ball, slice it, or only partly make contact with it. In any case; your shot will end up all to hell. Hey, you need to fix your golf swing? Oh right? I am supposed to have a great Golf Swing Lesson to help you out. It is an easy fix- that is the good news, so you can stop worrying.

Simple; get a Ben Hogan Video free online at YouTube watch and learn. Then get out on the driving range and practice your butt off. See how simple this Golf Swing Lesson is, I am not going to get into that astrophysicist rap and talk Golf analysis jargon. Man we got the technology of Videos and DVDs online it is so cool. Free is good?

Slo-mo is a beautiful thing and the good news is the Videos are free. You got choices of Ben Hogan, Tiger Woods or whatever flavor you like? Before long you will hit that ball and make solid contact consistently. That is when it becomes a natural part of your game. You will become a master swinger. Maybe even a perfect swinger.

Are you having fun? I am. Another problem is fast swinging. Swing speed is important but you realistically cannot be fast 100% of the time with every shot. If you hit the ball correctly it will ping away beautifully. There is no perfect swing speed or magic formula. Every golfer differs because of your own particular physicality, height, weight, muscle mass age, stance, etc…

Some pros have been clocked at 160 Mph in their swing speeds. You are not out there to beat speed records. Be prepared to lose a little swing speed for a lot more accuracy and consistency every time. Worrying unduly and agonizing about club speed and too many other things can ruin your game. Relax and you will play more naturally without any added stress.

Do not look to find what you are doing wrong. That is a lost cause and counter productive. Get back to commonsense and basics. Concentrate instead; on a golf lesson that teaches you how to get it right. Get that picture in your mind of Tiger or Ben Hogan in that slow motion golf swing video. Visualize yourself reproducing the same golf mechanics naturally.

I hope you found this golf swing lesson a welcome change from complex technical analysis and information overload.
